Is JCP for you?
JCP is a summer camp in Digby County that provides
quality Christian programming to young people from across
Nova Scotia and beyond, regardless of denominational or
faith background. All of our programs include meals,
lodging, bible discovery, and recreation. The camp is
owned and operated by the Christian Church (Disciples of
Christ) in Nova Scotia, and its activities are directed by a
Camp Committee. This committee is made up of
representatives from Christian Church congregations in
Nova Scotia along with others from the Digby area.
Summer programs are provided with the help of a dedicated
group of adult and youth volunteers who act as event
directors, cooks, camp parents, recreation directors,
worship leaders, and summer camp counselors. Camping
programs exist for young people, ages 7 to 19. JCP also
offers programming for adults—a Christian Women’s
Fellowship weekend and a family camp for our churches,
The camp is located on the beautiful shores of Porter’s
Lake, and JCP campers have ample opportunities to make
use of this lake and the surrounding environment for
swimming, canoeing, and nature exploration. Campers will
also experience campfire, crafts, sports, games, singing,
skits, worship, night games, prayer and Bible discovery.

JCP is celebrating 60 consecutive years of Christian camping during the summer of 2014. We have grown from one event, for teens, for one week in July of 1954, to several events for a variety of age groupings in 2014. We now annually provide the following: Beginner Camp (7-8 yr. olds), Junior Camp (9-10), Intermediate Camp (11-12), Chi-Rho Camp (13-15), CIT (15-16), NSCYF Event(s) (14-19), DiscipleFest (Family Camp) (all ages) and CWF Retreat (ladies). Please check on each of these camping events for more details and how to apply. Hope you will plan to be with us and to help create some camping history during the Summer of 2014.
Just what happens, program wise, at a Christian camp like JCP during a camping event? A quick answer is to suggest it is probably most of these answers and more: outstanding meals, campfire programs, Bible studies, singing, worship experiences, study groups, special information sessions, cabin time, cookouts and snacks, field games, night games, volleyball, archery, canoeing and kayaking, challenge course activities, swimming, leadership opportunities and special theme days.
JCP has grown from a beach - a field – tents – outhouses and a dining hall in 1954 to now include: 4 cabins (each housing a max. of 12 campers and 2 staff members); a washhouse (scheduled for replacement in 2015) with sinks, toilets and 6 showers; a dining hall and kitchen capable of seating and feeding upwards of 75 individuals; the Cosman Lodge designed as a meeting room and craft storage area; Shaw Cottage with its 2 bedrooms for our cooks plus areas for a workshop & recreation equipment storage plus a food storage area; and the Admin. Building housing 4 staff bedrooms, costume room, bathrooms, a small meeting room and small first aid room. JCP also provides 2 fully serviced trailer sites; a CIT area with its Screen Room and 7 tent pads, in its wooded setting; a Challenge Course area; a small sandy beach and its safe swim area; a campfire circle and its bench seating; an outdoor chapel able to seat 75 participants; a volleyball court; an archery area; some home-in-the-woods sites; some walking trails and a playing field.
JCP is annually in operation from early May to late October. The owners/operators plan and present a schedule of weeklong and weekend events during that time. JCP is also available for rental use by Christian and other groups and families. JCP has grown greatly since its humble beginnings in 1954. It is now time to again pause and to reflect upon and to celebrate that God granted accomplishment. JCP turns 60 in 2014! The Camp Administration Committee has agreed and encourages each camping event this summer to celebrate that achievement in various ways of their choosing. Collectively, however, we will come together on SUNDAY, JUNE 29th. , at JCP, to celebrate by offering “ JCP DAY”. All are invited to celebrate with us as we present activities of interest from about 1-9 PM that day. Look for details to follow. Plan to join us for this open house type event.
The Camp Administration Committee took precise action in late November of 2013 to move the “New Project” forward. The current plan is to end off our 60th. year celebration by undertaking a very expensive property improvement. A new, all-in-one-location, septic system; a second drilled well; and a larger, more modern, camper/staff wash house will be constructed. Construction is slated to begin in Sept. and be finished by early Nov. of 2014. The anticipated cost will be in the $150,000 - $160,000 range. By early in 2014 approximately 50% of the required funds have been received and more money has been pledged over the next few years. However, we still require thousands of dollars to fully fund this needed investment in JCP’s future. Your prayers AND your financial help would be both appreciated.
